Located on the premises of Arattupuzha Sastha Temple, this is one of the oldest and most spectacular pooram festivals of Kerala. Around sixty to seventy caparisoned elephants take part in the event. Arattupuzha is located about 14 km from Thrissur city. The Festival is held in April / May every year. Idols from forty one temples in the neighborhood villages are brought at night in procession to this village on rows of decorated elephants. The deities bathe or undertake ‘Aratt’ in the waters of the river and the place got its name probably from this event. The events associated with the pooram last for more than two week and there are colorful poorams and processions in a number of major shrines around notable being Thriprayar Sree Rama Temple, Urakam, Cherpu, Chathakkudam and Peruvanam pooram.
