This is arguably, the most famous festival of Kerala held during the 'Pooram' star during April / May every year. Thousands gather to witness the ‘pooram’ at Thekkinkadu Maidanam in front of Vadakkumnatha Temple in Thrissur. Dating back to the time of Sakthan Thampuran, the highlights include a spectacular pageant of thirty caparisoned elephants, 'Kudamattom' a swift and rhythmic changing of brightly colored and sequined parasols, dazzling fireworks and great performances of chendamelam and panchavadyam. Two main temples in the city, Paramekkavu and Tiruvambadi are the major participants in the event with a number of other temples also being part of the event. Gods and Goddesses from various temples are brought in all pomp and pageantry with the play of drums and musical instruments to the Thekkinkadu Maidan. This festival is attended by Lakhs of people.
