The Chalakkudi River Diversion Scheme was proposed for diverting the water for Irrigation purpose, which is an integral part of the Idamalayar Irriation Project. Water from this project is used for irrigating about twenty thousand hectares of land in Chalakkudi, Mukundapuram, Aluva and Kunnathunadu Taluks in Thrissur and Ernakulam districts. The stage I of the scheme comprising a weir at Thumboormuzhi across Chalakkudi River and a part of the canal system was commissioned during 1957 and stage II in 1966. Either side of the weir has been developed into prominent tourist spots. Thumboormoozhi Garden is located on Thrissur side and Ezhattumugham Prakrithi Gramam on Ernakulam side. The two centres are connected by a recently built hanging bridge across the river which is the most important attraction of the picnic spot. This butterfly garden and park is located on the route to Athirappilly and Vazhachal. Thumboormoozhi has all basic amenities for tourists including view points, children’s park, cafeteria, toilets, drinking water facilities, safety and security amenities etc. The centre also has a butterfly garden and successfully conducts tours to neighboring centres utilizing two tempo travelers and an air conditioned bus.
