These most famous waterfalls of Kerala are located in the Chalakkudi River in Athirappilly Panchayath which originates in the upper reaches of the Western Ghats. Many endangered and endemic species of flora and fauna are found in the forests of this area.  Gentle gurgling, fresh frothy spray and the calming sight of water make for the best reward after a tedious trek. An ideal picnic spot, Athirappilly is perched on the rim of the Sholayar forest ranges. There is certain dreaminess about this spot making it the favorite shooting location for noted film director Mani Ratnam amongst others. It is also the largest waterfall in Kerala, which stands tall at eighty feet and sometimes dubbed as ‘Indian Niagara’. It is close to dense green forests that are home to many endangered and endemic species of flora and fauna.
